Dr. Lori Smolinski
Lori Smolinski, O.D., has been affiliated with Grandville Optical since 2002. Dr. Lori, as she likes to be called, enjoys seeing patients of all ages for their eye care needs. She is equally comfortable examining children and seniors. Contact lenses are an area of interest for her, and she regularly fits even the more difficult astigmatism and bifocal cases.
Dr. Lori is also a Certified Low Vision Specialist, one of only a handful in Michigan to specialize in helping the visually impaired. While these exams are done at the Association for the Blind and Visually Impaired in Grand Rapids, it makes her well suited to ‘think outside of the box’ and tailor exams to individual patient needs. She prides herself in spending lots of quality time educating her patients and performing all aspects of the examinations herself, not relying on technicians and fancy gadgets.
After working with larger ophthalmology practices, she decided that only spending a few minutes with each patient was not why she became an optometrist. She respects her patients’ time, and strives to stay on schedule by not overbooking. Dr. Lori, by being a newer graduate, has the most up-to-date training that optometry has to offer. She is able to prescribe medications when appropriate, and performs comprehensive examinations including pupil dilation and glaucoma testing (without the uncomfortable air-puff test!).
Her undergraduate work was completed at Adrian College in Adrian, Michigan. Dr. Lori attended the small liberal arts college after competing for and receiving a Trustee’s scholarship, the most valuable scholarship that Adrian College offers. She majored in Biology with a Chemistry minor, and received many awards along the way for her volunteer services with the campus Civitan group and special needs members of the community.
Her optometry degree was awarded by the Michigan College of Optometry at Ferris State University. Dr. Lori graduated with highest honors, and was active in many of the school’s organizations. Her most prestigious award was for Outstanding Student in Contact Lens Care, given to her by Vistakon, a division of Johnson & Johnson.
Dr. Lori continues to be active in organized optometry, as a member of the American Optometric Association and its Low Vision and Contact Lens Sections. She is also an active member of the West Michigan Optometric Association, and is the President for the 2007-2008 session.
Personally, Dr. Lori is married and lives in Holland with her husband, Tom, and two spoiled dogs. She enjoys traveling and scrapbooking in her spare time. If you need an update on the Red Wings or Detroit Tigers, she can usually provide that as well.
Dr. Lori is on the office on Tuesdays only. Saturday hours by appointment only please!
Maribeth Bangert, O.D., recently joined our staff during 2008. The additon of her to our team has enabled us to accommodate Saturday examinations once a month. Dr. Maribeth graduated from Michigan College of Optometry at Ferris State University in 2002 with the Highest Distinction. She also completed her undergraduate work at FSU, and grew up just west of Big Rapids in White Cloud, MI. Since graduating she has worked in several different locations in northern and western Michigan including exotic locales such as Cadillac and Kalamazoo. She currently resides in the greater Grand Rapids area and hopes to make this her home for many years to come.
Dr. Maribeth's area of special interest is working with children and helping them with their eye and visual needs. She has taken many hours of further education regarding vision development and vision therapy and thouroughly enjoys examining infants and children. Yes, even infants as young as 6 months old can be examined to ensure good vision for a proper foundation for learning and development. Up to 80% of a child’s learning is from visual stimuli, even from the earliest ages. The American Optometric Association recommends that children receive their first eye and vision evaluation before their first birthday, at 3 years old, before they start school, and every one to two years after that. Even the smallest children deserve the advantage of a clear and comfortable visual system to enable them to succeed. Studies suggest that up to 25% of children in grade school have a problem with their visual system. This may not be in how clearly they can read a set of letters, but in how their two eyes work together (binocular vision), how their eyes can change focus (accommodation), or in any of the numerous ways that our brain processes and integrates what our eyes see (visual integration and processing). An eye and vision evaluation does not have to wait until the letters of the alphabet can be recognized and recited. Different tests and techniques enable optometrists such as Dr. Maribeth to evaluate pre-verbal children and even adults with special needs.
One of Dr. Maribeth's other interests is in international mission work. Since starting optometry school in 1998, she and her husband have participated in eight different eye care related mission trips. Destinations have included Guyana, Haiti, Honduras, Ecuador, and most recently the Philippines. These trips allow many of the old glasses donated through local optometrist's offices and other organizations such as Lions Clubs to be recycled and provided free of cost to patients in developing countries. Patients seen at these international clinics cannot otherwise recieve eye or vision care because of transportation, financial, or a variety of other reasons. Many times receiving a pair of recycled prescription glasses or a simple pair of reading glasses allow them to work to support their families, or enter and succeed in schooling. Eye care mission work has become a passion for Dr. Maribeth and she plans to continue leading and participating in these type of trips as time allows.
Most of Dr. Maribeth's time outside of work is spent taking care of and nuturing her two children, Cora age 4, and Gabriel 18mo. Her husband of almost 10 years, dog, cat, and tank full of fish round out their home. She also enjoys reading a good book, getting into The Good Book (the Bible), volunteering and serving, and when time and ambition allow, walking or running.
